Tuition: The program invoice will be sent via e-bill in the first week in June 2024 and will be due in the beginning of July 2024. It covers tuition, some course materials and costs related to any program-related activities. It does not cover any other expenses such as those listed below.

Housing: All students are required to live in program-arranged housing. There are two housing options to choose from, a single or double room.

**Document (transcript) Fee: This is a one-time fee of $105 that is charged to all visiting students. This may apply to Barnard students if they haven’t taken a course at Columbia before.

Deposit: All students are required to submit a non-refundable $1,000 deposit to reserve your place in the program and it will be applied towards your tuition.

Meals: The cost for meals and food will vary widely depending on individual spending habits.

Local Transportation: You will be responsible for paying for transportation to and from the airport at the start and end of the program.

Visa Expenses: International students may need a visa, which will incur additional costs including travel to visa application appointment.

Books and course supplies: Information regarding summer course materials will be distributed before the course begins.

Cell Phone: All students are required to have a working cell phone capable of making and receiving both local and international calls throughout the duration of the program. This estimate is based on costs of U.S. cell phone plans.

Airfare: Estimated cost of round-trip airfare from home to Tokyo. Students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements from your preferred departure city to the program.

Personal Expenses: Personal expenses are highly variable based on each person's spending habits. They may include entertainment and personal travel.


As part of the program, you will be covered for urgent and emergent care while you are abroad. Routine and preventive care is not included so you should maintain a health insurance policy that will provide coverage outside the U.S. or your home country. This cost is not included in the chart above.
