Provides fellowships to U.S. and Canadian students placed in internships with a German state parliament

The Émigré Memorial German Internship Program (EMGIP) provides fellowships to U.S. and Canadian students placed in internships with a German state parliament (Landtag), affording them an opportunity to gain firsthand government work experience, improve their advanced German language skills, and learn about German culture. EMGIP runs three times a year—in the fall, spring, and early summer—for one to three months, depending on elections, holiday schedules, and state offices’ preferences. The program places participants in internships tailored as much as possible to their interests.

Fellowships provide monthly stipends of €500 for U.S. citizens (this amount may be different for Canadian citizens), housing referral assistance, and work authorization services.

Candidates for EMGIP must be U.S. or Canadian citizens between 18 and 30 years of age, and pursuing undergraduate or graduate study at accredited U.S. or Canadian universities before, during, or after the program. Candidates must have high-intermediate German language skills (oral and written) and have a good command of professional vocabulary in their field. Further, candidates are expected to have at least two years of university-level study in a field related to international relations, public administration, political science, law, economics, European studies (with an emphasis on Germany, German, or German studies), with a minor in one of these fields; candidates should also have some relevant work experience to demonstrate adaptability to a professional environment and the ability to use theoretical skills in the workplace.
