Provide funding for a year of advanced language study in East and Southeast Asia

Blakemore Freeman Fellowships are awarded to individuals pursuing professional, academic, or business careers that involve the regular use of an East or Southeast Asian language. The grants fund a year of advanced language study at major language study programs in the various countries of East and Southeast Asia. Where there is no structured advanced-level language program at an educational institution in a country, the grant may underwrite private instruction according to terms set forth in the application instructions.

Grants cover tuition and a stipend for related educational expenses, basic living costs and transportation.

To be eligible, an applicant should be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; be pursuing an academic, professional, or business career that involves the regular use of a modern Asian language; have an undergraduate degree upon taking up the grant; be at or near an advanced level in the language as defined in the grant guidelines; and be able to devote himself or herself exclusively to language study during the term of the grant.

Grants are highly competitive. Selection criteria include a focused, well-defined career objective involving Asia, for which use of the language is an important aspect; the potential to make a significant contribution to a field of study or area of professional activity in an Asian country; prior experience in the country or involvement in activities related to the country; and good academic, professional, or business background, appropriate to the career objective.
