Ava Goldwyn CC’21
Bonjour à tous! I am a sophomore in Columbia College studying Art History and Archaeology. Last summer, I had the opportunity to travel with Columbia’s French and Francophone Studies program in Paris. Over the two-month period, I took the two incredible, and very different, courses offered in French: L’économie du sexe and La réinvention de Paris. These classes not only pushed me to speak, write, and think in French, but gave me a new appreciation for the diversity and richness of our global community. Living in a homestay in the 11th arrondissement with my lovely host mother, I experienced the many of the quirks of Parisian life. From daily trips to outdoor markets, to picnics along the Seine, to late-night visits to museums, I discovered the vibrancy of Paris. Over weekends, my classmates and I took our homework to the farms and orchards of Normandie and to the beaches of St-Malo. There was a week-long break in the middle of the program, during which my friends and I traveled to Cinque Terre, Italy to enjoy the Mediterranean and returned to Paris via the south of France, visiting Nice, Marseille, and Avignon along the way. Of all the things I did during my stay, nothing can compare to the day the French won the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1998. Some friends and I marched and sang with the entirety of Paris all the way to l’arc de triomphe. I can already tell that these two summer months will shape the rest of my college experience, and possibly my life. There’s so much more I want to say about my experience, so if this program sounds like something you might be interested or if you just want to chat, please please please reach out!
