Congratulations on your decision to apply to China! Please select the appropriate link above to begin the application process. If you are not a student at Columbia or Barnard, please select Visiting Student.

The Office of Global Programs prefers that you complete the online application.

Applications are not considered complete until all components have been received.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PASSPORTS: If you do not have a passport, or your passport will expire within the next year, please apply for one now. Please expedite the application since we will require passport information from you in March in order to begin the visa application process.


Columbia University/Barnard College Students

Application Deadline

April 6, 2008 -- This program is now closed for summer 2008. The deadline for the summer 2009 program will be in early March 2009.  Please check back in September 2008 for updated information.

How to Apply

Application materials, except for transcripts, are part of the online application. Complete applications are due by the deadline. A complete application consists of the following:

  • Completed online application form.
  • Statement of purpose (500 word statement about personal and academic goals and how you intend to achieve them). This may be uploaded into the online application.
  • Completed online study abroad approval form:
    • Barnard students: Dean Hilary Lieberman Link should complete this form for you.
    • Columbia College students: Do not complete this form. Please see Dean to be cleared for study abroad.
    • General Studies students: Do not complete this form. Please see Dean to be cleared for study abroad.
    • Graduate students and postgraduates do no need to submit this form.
  • Completed online language recommendation form.
  • Official transcript(s) in envelopes sealed by the issuing institutions. Please submit this to the application contact below by the stated deadline.
  • Supplemental China Form
  • Writing sample from your most recent Chinese course (test or homework). If you cannot provide this or are unsure of your language level, please contact the Office of Global Programs.

Submitting the Application

Visiting Students

Application Deadline

  • $50 application fee. Credit card information must be provided on the application before it can be submitted.
  • Completed online study abroad approval form.
    • Graduate students and postgraduates do not need to submit this form.
  • Completed online language recommendation form.
  • Official transcript(s) in envelopes sealed by the issuing institutions. Please submit this to the application contact below by the stated deadline.
  • Supplemental China Form
  • Writing sample from your most recent Chinese course (test or homework). If you cannot provide this or are unsure of your language level, please contact the Office of Global Programs.
