Study at the Pontificía Universida de Católica (PUC-Rio) through Brown Program in Rio de Janeiro, which is a supported direct-enrollment program offered during the fall and academic year. Prior to departure, you need to have taken at least 4 semesters of Portuguese. If you have taken Portuguese for Spanish-speakers, you may also be considered applicable for this program. To enhance your experience, you stay in a homestay throughout the experience.
Founded in 1941, the PUC was the first private institution of higher learning in Brazil. It is reputed to be one of the top five universities in the country. If you have strong Portuguese language skills and an interest in contemporary Brazil this would be an excellent program for you to consider. The program begins with a month-long, intensive orientation which includes instruction in Portuguese language and Brazilian culture, with several hours of classes every day and additional lectures by various specialists. After the initial month, the program offers a combination of regular university classes at the Pontificía Universida de Católica (PUC-Rio) with Portuguese language courses. A wide range of coursework is available in: history, politics, environmental studies, international relations, literature, economics, education, art history, and studio art.
In addition to living with a homestay family, you also have the option of getting involved with the local community through volunteer projects, as well as through campus groups and activities.
