Overview

CIEE China: Accelerated Chinese Language in Shanghai is offered during the fall, spring and academic year to students with at least four semesters of Mandarin Chinese to develop advanced communicative skills in Mandarin Chinese; understand contemporary economic and political issues affecting China and the affects of China as a rising power in the world today. Students live with a Chinese roommate in the dorms or with a host family. Though CIEE offers beginning tracks, Columbia students are required to take the advanced language track.

Academics

Though CIEE offers courses in English, Columbia College and General Studies students are required to take all courses in Chinese. Based at East China Normal University, course selections are dependent upon the students initial Chinese level. Most students will take two intensive language courses in addition to elective courses in subjects such as:

  • Asian Studies
  • Chinese Studies/Chinese Culture
  • Film Studies
  • International Relations
  • Religious Studies
  • Sociology

Independent research options are also available.

Program Features

Students have three housing options: living with a Chinese host family, living in a dorm with a Chinese roommate, living in a dorm with an American roommate. Students are HIGHLY encouraged to choose either option one or two and live with a Chinese national. Living in a homestay or a dorm with a Chinese roommate will dramatically increase students exposure to language learning and cultural immersion.
