CIEE Spain: Architecture and Design in Barcelona

Language of Instruction: English, Spanish
Location:
Barcelona,
Spain
Term: Academic Year, Spring

Overview

This program is ONLY open to students majoring in architecture and design. The CIEE Architecture and Design program includes a combination of CIEE run courses and local university courses at ELISAVA School of Design, an independently operated branch of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, and Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura (ESARO) is the School of Architecture of the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC). Known for being edgy and modern, the spirit of Barcelona has shaped some of the most fascinating art and architecture in the world, including works by Gaudi, Miro, and Picasso. Walking though the city, one can observe 2,000 years of architectural history – Roman remains, the network of narrow streets in the Old Town, the 19th-century Eixample district with its original examples of modernista architecture – contrasting with the ultramodern showpieces that continue to redesign its skyline.

Academic Program

Students choose from a range of courses in both English and Spanish. All students in both tracks enroll in a semester-long Spanish language course at their level (4 credits) and a specially designed core course in Spanish: The City in Visual Culture. Students are able to choose courses from ESARO, ELISAVA and CIEE. Columbia students should take at least two courses at the local universities of ESARO and ELISAVA.

Program Features

All students on the program are eligible for a variety of volunteer opportunities. Student who have at least five semesters of Spanish are eligible for not-for-credit internships in Barcelona.
Students can choose to live in either a homestay or a residencia. We recommend homestays to maximize your language learning as well as your cultural immersion in Catalunya.

Eligibility

All students should consult the OGP eligibility page to ensure that they meet all specific academic requirements for each school (CC, GS, SEAS) to study abroad.
