The Middlebury in China program in Hangzhou, in cooperation with CET Academic Programs, offers an immersion opportunity in Chinese language and culture. Students must already have an intermediate proficiency in the language, though having taken a fifth semester of Chinese is preferred. Students choose from a wide variety of courses taught in Chinese, live with homestay families, and participate in activities and excursions. Hangzhou offers a broad-based curriculum in humanities, including history, art and literature, religious studies, foreign relations, and Chinese social issues.
Students take advanced Chinese language and culture courses. The curriculum was designed for the specific needs of high intermediate and advanced Chinese language students. All students are required to take the One-on-One Content-Based Tutorial and the Area Studies Class pertinent to the host city. In addition, all students choose two elective classes from among those that are offered. All courses are conducted entirely in Chinese.
Every student is paired with a student from the host university. Chinese room mates are selected through an application process, and every effort is made to match Middlebury and Chinese students with compatible interests and habits. Previous students who have participated in the Middlebury School in China agree that it offers amazing opportunities to build lasting friendships and integrate them in campus life. Students are housed with their roommates in double-occupancy rooms in a dormitory that is not far from the classroom building. The dormitory offers a student lounge, free laundry facilities, a galley kitchen, and staff offices. Meals are not included in the cost of this program.
