The University of the Witwatersrand, or Wits, is located in Johannesburg, the largest metropolitan area and
industrial and commercial hub of Southern Africa. As one of
the largest English-medium universities in the region, Wits has built
up a reputation as one of the
leading research universities in Africa. It has more than 18,000
students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, and a longstanding
commitment to non-discrimination: broadening access to the university
for students from traditionally disadvantaged communities. Not
surprisingly, therefore, the campus has a lively and progressive
atmosphere.
This program is appropriate for students from all academic disciplines who have an interest in learning about contemporary South African life and society and the forces that have created it. Student take regular classes alongside their South African counterparts in all Wits faculties You may undertake an independent study with faculty permission. There is limited on-campus housing, or students live in shared students houses nearby . There are many opportunities to get involved with local communities by volunteering and campus activities and clubs.
