IES works with the Center for Japanese Studies (CJS) at Nanzan University to offer a program of Japanese Language courses, and Japanese studies courses taught in English. Students with advanced language may take more advanced classes taught in Japanese.

Students are encouraged to integrate into the local community by living with a Japanese family or in university dorms, and through participation in a variety of extracurricular activities that provide a deeper understanding of Japanese culture.
