Notes:
This program is designed for students with a interest in contemporary Brazil and in learning the Portuguese language. São Paulo is a multi-cultural city of more than 17 million people. It is the second largest urban area in the Americas and an important South American economic and cultural center. São Paulo is often compared to New York City because of its distinct ethnic neighborhoods and excellent cultural venues.
The program offers a combination of direct enrollment classes at a Brazilian university, Portuguese language courses, and core CIEE courses about contemporary Brazilian society with a focus on urban studies using São Paulo as a case study. While in Brazil, students live with host families and can get involved with the local community through volunteer projects, and through campus groups and activities. The program begins with a four-week Intensive Language and Culture Program (ILCP), held in Salvador da Bahia for the fall semester and in São Paulo for the spring semester.
Students should have either a strong Spanish language background, have taken Portuguese for Spanish speakers, or one year of Portuguese.
