Santiago de los Caballeros, the second largest city in the Dominican Republic, is surrounded by mountains. Known as La Ciudad Corazón (City of the Heart), Santiago is the commercial and cultural center of the fertile Cibao Valley region. Although it is a growing city with a population exceeding 700,000, Santiago retains many features of a small town, and Santiaguero hospitality is known far and wide.
The program is based at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) and focuses on improving Spanish Language skills and Carribean Studies. Studetns enroll in a Spanish language course, a core course Contemporary Dominican Republic: Political and Socioeconomic Processes, and three or more elective courses PUCMM.
In the DR, students live with host families and can get involved with the local community through volunteer projects, student teaching and practicums.
