Overview

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and our office, The Center for Undergraduate Global Engagement, have an exchange relationship that allows undergraduate students in Columbia College and Columbia Engineering to study abroad. While having some background in Chinese is helpful, it is not required. All courses are taught in English. During the term abroad, you live in HKU residence halls.

Academics

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is the oldest tertiary education institution in Hong Kong. The University has a student population of 9,000 undergraduate students and 5,700 postgraduate students. As a Columbia student, you are strongly encouraged to take a Mandarin or Cantonese course while abroad to further your understanding of the culture. While at HKU, you can enroll in courses in the following faculties: Architecture, Arts (which includes Humanities), Economics, Engineering, Science, and Social Sciences.

Program Features

As an exchange student, you enjoy the same access as local students to university facilities such as the University Libraries, Sports Centers, Computer Center, University Health Services, etc. You are also welcome to participate in activities organized by residence halls and student societies.

Review eligibility to ensure that you meet all Columbia requirements to study abroad. Please note that only Columbia College and Columbia Engineering can apply for this exchange program.

Application Instructions

To apply, you must complete the two steps below. Deadlines vary and some applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Therefore, you should complete the steps below:

  • To apply for Columbia clearance (approval) to study abroad, click on "Start Your Application" on this webpage. Clearance applications are approved on a rolling basis until the application deadline listed on this webpage.
  • Clearance applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis or reviewed soon after the application deadline. If eligible, you will be nominated as an exchange student. If nominated, you will be provided further information about next steps in the nomination process. You will be required to submit additional materials to be formally admitted to the university.
